Author Guidelines

Journal of English Language and Educational Studies (JELES) is a peer-reviewed, open-access, and triannual academic journal published in April, August, and December by  English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Universitas Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya. JELES is dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of scholarly research in the fields of English language education, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), applied linguistics, curriculum development, and literature.

We accept both conceptual and empirical research papers that fall under, but are not limited to, the following categories:

  1. English Language Teaching, Learning, and Assessment
  2. English for Specific Purposes (ESP)
  3. Curriculum and Instructional Design in Language Education
  4. Linguistics and Applied Linguistics
  5. Multiculturalism and Globalization in Language Education
  6. Literary Analysis and Cultural Studies
  7. Digital Pedagogy and Educational Innovation

All submissions are double-blind peer-reviewed by reviewers from a range of academic and cultural backgrounds. JELES welcomes submissions written in all recognized varieties of English (e.g., British, American, or World Englishes), provided that usage is consistent and academically sound. We support both experienced and first-time authors, and we make every effort to offer constructive feedback during the review process.

Editorial and Submission Process

  • Each submission is first reviewed by the editorial team to assess alignment with the journal’s focus, formatting, and quality standards.
  • Papers passing the initial screening are forwarded for double-blind peer review.
  • Authors are notified by email at each stage of the review process. Please allow up to 7 weeks for the review process to be completed.
  • All accepted manuscripts are published online with open access.
  • JELES does not charge any publication or submission fees.

General Submission Requirements

  • Submissions must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere.
  • Manuscripts must be written in Cambria, 12 pt font, 1.5 line spacing, and follow the JELES template.
  • Articles should be a maximum of 6,000 words, excluding references, tables, and appendices.
  • Only Microsoft Word (.docx) format is accepted.
  • Do not insert headers, footers, or page numbers.
  • Include the following information on the title page:
    1. Title of the article
    2. Full names of all authors
    3. Affiliations and institutional addresses
    4. Contact email of the corresponding author
    5. Author biographies (100–150 words each)

Abstract and Keywords

  • The abstract should be a maximum of 250 words and written in structured format (Background, Methodology, Findings, Conclusion, and Originality).
  • Include 3–5 keywords, separated by semicolons, listed in alphabetical order.

Tables, Figures, and Formatting

  • Tables and figures must be placed within the manuscript at the point they should appear.
  • All tables must include a title/caption above the table, and figures must have captions below the figure.
  • Use Times New Roman, 8 pt for tables and figure captions.
  • Do not use vertical lines in tables.

Referencing Style

  • All references must follow the APA 7th edition
  • A minimum of 80% of the references should be from peer-reviewed journals and published within the last 10 years.
  • Avoid citing sources from predatory or non-academic journals.
  • In-text citations and the reference list must be consistent and complete.
  • Authors are encouraged to use citation management tools such as Mendeley, Zotero, or EndNote.

Ethical Considerations

By submitting to JELES, authors affirm that:

  • The work is original and does not contain plagiarized, libelous, or defamatory content.
  • The manuscript has not been submitted or published elsewhere.
  • All listed co-authors have made a significant contribution to the work and approve the final version.
  • Proper credit is given to all individuals, institutions, and sources that contributed to the research.
  • Permissions have been obtained for copyrighted material, personal communications, or third-party figures.
  • Any potential conflicts of interest and funding sources are clearly declared.
  • Authors agree to inform the editor if a major error or omission is discovered after publication.

Pre-Submission Checklist

Before submitting your manuscript to JELES (Journal of English Language and Educational Studies), please ensure that the following requirements are met:

  1. The manuscript strictly follows the JELES template and formatting guidelines.
  2. The referencing and citations comply with the APA 7th edition style consistently throughout.
  3. A structured abstract is included, covering: Background, Methodology, Findings, Conclusion, and Originality.
  4. All listed co-authors have reviewed and approved the final version of the manuscript.
  5. The article has not been published, submitted, or is under review in any other journal.
  6. All references are complete, current, and traceable, with proper in-text citations.
  7. The manuscript avoids unnecessary capitalization, using title case only for headings, titles, or proper nouns.
  8. The submission includes a brief biography, institutional affiliation, and email address for each author.
  9. There are no headers, footers, or page numbers in the manuscript file.
  10. Tables and figures are clearly labeled, captioned, and placed within the text where they are first referenced.
  11. The manuscript is submitted in Microsoft Word format (.docx)

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
